Proactive Investors – Brits taking part in Dry January would have saved £118 on average, only £1 more than the £117 people would have saved last year, data from Alcohol Change UK found.
Alcohol inflation was at 9.6% in December 2023, according to ONS data, indicating that on average Brits have cut down on their drinking volumes.
Just under one-third of Dry Jan participants are believed to have ordered a low or non-alcohol beer during January, with half planning to continue drinking these products after also.
It may be the reason why a record one in five drinkers in the UK have taken part in the month-long sobriety challenge, according to research from the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
“I have managed to save myself £200 for my holiday fund which I am super happy about as I normally find it quite hard to save for these kind of things,” said one Dry Jan participant.
In total 8.5 million are believed to have taken part in the challenge, Alcohol Change UK added.
Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the BBPA said: “Over the last 15 years, alcohol consumption in the UK has fallen by 15% and this January has been the driest yet with 1 in 5 giving up alcohol.”
On Wednesday, industry data found alcohol sales had dropped by nearly half in January compared to December.
Other challenges like Veganuary, when people go vegan for January, are also believed to be affecting sales, with retailers experiencing an 8% uptick in own-label plant-based ranges.
