Beyond the banana: Maurizio Cattelan presents new wall work at Basel Social Club – The Art Newspaper

Maurizio Cattelan’s Comedian has rarely left the headlines since it was first shown at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. Just last month, the banana fixed to the wall with duct tape was stolen from an exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France. (The fruit was quickly replaced in the museum galleries.)

This year, Cattelan is showing at Basel Social Club, with five works presented by Three Star Books, the Paris-based publisher. Among them, BEWARE OF YOURSELF is only the second statement wall piece the artist has made. “My collaboration with Three Star Books spans more than 18 years,” Cattelan tells The Art Newspaper. “You should never forget where you come from, and it is vital to honour your partners. Within the context of Basel Social Club, Three Star Books brings the exact kind of street credibility needed to shift the energy and make an impact.”

• Basel Social Club, Erdbeergraben 1, Basel, until 20 June
