Tokyo Gendai has announced details for its fourth edition. The fair will return to PACIFICO Yokohama from September 11th through13th, 2026, with a VIP preview and vernissage on September 10th. Launched in 2023, the fair opens the country’s traditional autumn cultural season.
This year's edition will feature 63 galleries across five sectors, with a program spanning boundary-pushing interventions with traditional craft, digital art, and large-scale installation.
Returning international galleries include Pace Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ, Ceysson & Bénétière, and Gana Art. Highlights from local galleries include Taka Ishii Gallery presenting new works by Adam Pendleton alongside paintings by Fu Nagasawa, and KOTARO NUKAGA featuring works by José Parlá, Tomokazu Matsuyama, and Keita Morimoto, among others.
“The positive response we have received over the past few years is an indicator of the very important role that Japan plays in the global cultural scene and art market,” said the fair’s co-founder Magnus Renfrew. “Tokyo Gendai was established to galvanize cross-cultural exchange and to welcome international audiences to experience the breadth and the exceptional quality of contemporary art in Japan.”
This year’s fair also features four curated sections. The Hana ‘Flower’ sector, dedicated to early and mid-career artists, will have highlights including a solo booth by Yukino Yamanaka at CON_ and a solo presentation of Max Gómez Canle’s paintings in natural pigments at W-Galería. A new sector, Miki Trunk, debuts this edition, dedicated to works on paper, photography, and print, while in the digital-focused Tane ‘Seed’ sector, TAEX presents Marina Abramović’s avatar project alongside a debut special project showcasing Taiwanese galleries including ChiWen and Double Square Gallery. The Sato ‘Meadow’ program activates the fair space with large-scale installations and performances, with works by Qin Feng, Syozo Taniguchi, and a group sound exhibition from MtK Contemporary Art, among others.
The fair also introduces the 2026 AMA Artist Award recipient Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers), who will present new works created especially for Tokyo Gendai. Beyond the fairgrounds, major institutions offer concurrent programming during fair week, with Ron Mueck at the Mori Art Museum, “Masterpieces of the Renaissance from the Musée du Louvre” at The National Art Center, Tokyo, and “Hiroshi Sugimoto: Extinction” at the National Museum of Modern Art.
