What’s Open (or Closed) on Thanksgiving and Black Friday? Here’s What to Know

Thanksgiving is here!

The holiday, officially recognized by the federal government since 1870, has roots that trace back even further. President Abraham Lincoln declared a November “day of Thanksgiving” in 1863, while President George Washington issued a proclamation for “a day of public thanksgiving and prayer” on Nov. 26, 1789.

In modern times, Thanksgiving also ushers in another significant event: Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that’s synonymous with shopping deals and bustling stores.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s open or closed on Thanksgiving and Black Friday:

Are Stock Markets Open?

The U.S. stock and bond markets are closed on Thanksgiving.

On Black Friday, stock markets will close early at 1 p.m. Eastern, while bond markets will close at 2 p.m.

Is Mail Delivered? What About FedEx and UPS?

USPS: No mail delivery on Thanksgiving; regular service resumes on Black Friday.

FedEx: Closed on Thanksgiving, except for “Custom Critical” deliveries. Modified services are available on Black Friday.

UPS: No deliveries on Thanksgiving except for “Express Critical” shipments. Normal delivery and pickup services resume on Black Friday.

Are Banks Open?

Banks are closed on Thanksgiving. However, ATMs and online banking are available.

On Black Friday, banks are generally open, though some branches may have limited hours.

Will Government Offices Be Closed?

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal and state government offices will be closed.

Black Friday is not a federal holiday but is recognized as a state holiday in more than 20 states. Check local schedules for specifics.

Do Kids Have School?

Schools are closed on Thanksgiving, and most remain closed. However, check with your local school district to confirm.

Are Stores Open?

In recent years, the trend of stores opening on Thanksgiving has declined. Major retailers like Walmart and Target will be closed on Thanksgiving.

Some grocery stores, dollar stores, and pharmacies—such as CVS, Family Dollar, and Whole Foods—may be open but with reduced hours.

On Black Friday, stores typically open early, with some kicking off as early as 5 a.m. Check with individual retailers for their schedules.

Whether you’re planning to enjoy a quiet holiday or dive into the Black Friday frenzy, now you know what to expect!
