Anna Weyant paints Marc Jacobs for "Vanity Fair" cover.

Anna Weyant has painted designer Marc Jacobs for the cover of Vanity Fair's Style 2026 issue, for the cover story ”Marc Jacobs Cannot Tell a Lie.” Published August 18th, the story coincides with Jacobs's sale of his namesake label, Marc Jacobs International, which is estimated at $850 million.

Weyant’s portrait depicted Jacobs in Chanel tweed, teal flower earrings, and his hair held back with silver salon clips, rendered in Weyant's Old Master–inspired style against a dark, painterly background. The portrait appears on the cover alongside a line by the poet Walt Whitman, which reads, ”From this hour I ordain myself loos'd of limits and imaginary lines.”

This is the second time Jacobs has commissioned Weyant to put her own subjects into his world. In December 2024, as Vogue's first external guest editor, Jacobs tapped Weyant to paint model Kaia Gerber in a Marc Jacobs Fall 2024 dress, for one of two alternate covers of the magazine's December issue, telling Vogue at the time, ”I love Anna's women, and I love the idea of Kaia seen by Anna.”

The two collaborated again more recently when Weyant transformed Manhattan's Academy Mansion into a life-size, walk-through dollhouse during New York Fashion Week, populated with models dressed in Jacobs's dollhouse-themed collection, an installation presented with the bank Capital One and membership club The Cultivist that drew guests including actress Phoebe Tonkin and Jacobs himself. Meanwhile, for the 2026 Met Gala, Weyant wore a pink lace-trim organza slip dress from the Marc Jacobs Spring 2025 runway.

Weyant, 31, is known for close, faintly unsettling scenes of girlhood rendered in a Dutch Old Masters–inflected technique, her sfumato shading giving figures a porcelain delicacy shadowed by unease. Represented by Gagosian since 2022, she hit her auction record that year when Falling Woman (2020) sold for $1.6 million at Sotheby's, eight times its high estimate.

Vanity Fair has tapped artists for its covers in the past. Most recently, British artist Issy Wood painted a portrait of Charli XCX for Vanity Fair's November 2025 art-issue cover.
