In advance of its scheduled reopening early next year after renovation work commenced in 2021, the Cultural Center of the Philippines appointed Carlos Quijon Jr. as the next chief curator of its museum for contemporary art.

As reported by ArtReview, “Quijon is an art historian, curator and critic based between Manila and New York. For the past two years, he has been the inaugural C-MAP (Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives) research fellow for Southeast and East Asia at MoMA, New York.”

His previous curatorial credits include the Philippine Pavilion at the 2024 Venice Biennale as well as an exhibition for Lesley-Anne Cao at A+ Works of Art in Kuala Lumpur and a show titled “Echoes and Mirages” about art across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at the São Paulo gallery Almeida & Dale. Writing by Quijon has appeared in publications including Artforum, ArtReview, Art Monthly, e-flux, and Frieze.

In a press release, CCP President Kaye C. Tinga said, “As we prepare for the reopening of the CCP next year, we are not only boosting our facilities that will host our audiences and the public, but also our lineup of visionaries who will curate and conceptualize art exhibitions and performances that we can truly be proud of. We’re glad to welcome Carlos into our artistic family. We know that we will learn from his global experiences, as much as he will also be inspired by our contemporary art collection.”

About his new role, Quijon said, “As a practitioner, I believe in CCP’s role in advocating for and enriching the artistic sensibilities of our Filipino artists and promoting them to our local public and our international audiences, as well. The goal is to strengthen the place of the CCP in national and regional conversations around contemporary art.”
