Marilyn Minter Wins Anderson Ranch’s International Artist Award

Marilyn Minter, known for her feminist practice that blends painting and photography, has won this year’s International Artist Award from the Anderson Ranch Arts Center. Minter will be honored at the annual Ranch Gala, part of the Ranch’s annual Ranch Week series in July.

Ranch President and CEO Peter Waanders told ARTnews in an interview that the choice of Minter came down to her meticulous technique, her studio practice, and her longtime dedication to teaching (Minter is a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts in New York). “She’s really a maker, and focused on that. We were also excited that she is a decades-long educator.”

In an interview, Minter praised the Ranch’s residencies and scholarships, and the featured speakers from a variety of disciplines. “It’s all about ideas,” she said, “and cross-pollination, and access to different brains.”

Minter is the 28th recipient of the award, which has been given out annually since 1997. Recent recipients include Charles Gaines, Christian Marclay, Simone Leigh, and Theaster Gates.

During Ranch Week, Anderson Ranch will present a screening of Pretty Dirty, the documentary chronicling Minter’s life and work, and Minter will appear in a live conversation with New Museum director Lisa Phillips. Other artists featured in conversations as part of the summer series will be Leonardo Drew, Robert Lugo, Aliza Nisenbaum, and Alicja Kwade.
