Germany’s 100-Year-Old Merz Academy Declared Insolvent

The Merz Academy in Stuttgart, Germany, has filed for insolvency, the academy announced on Wednesday. Classes, however, are expected to continue at the university, which offers Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs at the intersection of design, art, media, and technology.

Monopol reported that the university’s application was approved on Tuesday by the Stuttgart District Court with a provisional self-administration order. The insolvency, it believes, is a result of a failing financial model, declining student enrollment, and the end of key cooperation agreements.

Merz Academy is operated by the independent, non-profit Merz Education Center. It has been a state-accredited university since 1985. The Merz School, the Merz Vocational College, and the Merz Education Center are legally independent and are expected to continue operating, with only the academy affected by the insolvency.

For now, efforts will focus on maintaining academic operations while building a more financially sustainable future. The school will continue under court supervision, with further discussions expected in the coming months with the state of Baden-Württemberg, universities, foundations, companies, and other partners.

“This step is not easy for any of us,” Merz Academy managing director Andrea Zweifel told SWR. “The provisional self-administration gives us the opportunity to restructure the Merz Academy financially and secure its future.”

Merz is hardly the first college affected by declining enrollment and finances, with independent art schools closing and major universities worldwide shifting curricula.
