Warehouse TERRADA will hold TENNOZ ART WEEK 2026, a multi-venue art event in Tennoz, Tokyo, from September 10 to 13. Now in its fourth edition, the event will be held in collaboration with Tokyo Gendai (September 11–13 at PACIFICO Yokohama), the international art fair for which Warehouse TERRADA serves as an official partner. On September 12 and 13, free shuttle buses will run at regular intervals between PACIFICO Yokohama and Tennoz for Tokyo Gendai ticket holders. Details of the shuttle schedule will be announced on the event’s official website.
With art storage facilities, galleries, and museums clustered along its canals, Tennoz is one of Tokyo’s leading art districts. Its history dates back to the final years of the Edo period, when the shogunate constructed coastal defense batteries known as daiba in response to the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry. Taking advantage of its proximity to the port, the area later developed into a logistics district where factories and warehouses were concentrated.
Founded in 1950, Warehouse TERRADA has expanded beyond its core warehousing business, developing a range of art-related facilities since the 2000s. In 2022, it established a bonded gallery space where imported artworks can be exhibited and stored without immediately incurring customs duties or consumption tax, further strengthening Tennoz’s role as a hub for the international circulation of art works.
Today, Tennoz is home to a range of art spaces operated by Warehouse TERRADA, including the gallery complex TERRADA ART COMPLEX, WHAT MUSEUM, and WHAT CAFE, which exhibits and sells works by emerging artists. Tennoz’s proximity to Haneda Airport has also helped make the area one of Tokyo’s leading art destinations, attracting contemporary art collectors and enthusiasts from Japan and abroad.
TENNOZ ART WEEK 2026 invites visitors to explore these venues and experience a wide range of contemporary art, as well as open studios and workshops using traditional painting materials. Through programs that offer access not only to finished works but also to the places where art is made and the techniques behind it, the event aims to convey both the state of contemporary Japanese art today and the multifaceted appeal of Tennoz as an art hub. Below are this year’s highlights.
1. An Art Fair Bringing Together Galleries from Japan and Abroad

TERRADA ART COMPLEX, which spans two buildings and is home to some of Japan’s leading contemporary art galleries, including MAKI Gallery, ANOMALY, KOSAKU KANECHIKA, and Tomio Koyama Gallery, will host Tennoz Contemporary, the centerpiece of TENNOZ ART WEEK 2026. This year’s edition brings together 38 galleries and spaces.
At TERRADA ART COMPLEX I, resident galleries will stage collaborative exhibitions with guest galleries from Japan and overseas: MAKI Gallery with TEZUKAYAMA GALLERY (Osaka), KOKI ARTS (Tokyo), LEESAYA (Tokyo), and Marco Gallery (Osaka); KOTARO NUKAGA with NUKAGA GALLERY, N project, √K Contemporary (Tokyo), COHJU (Kyoto), and TATSURO KISHIMOTO (Tokyo); and Tomio Koyama Gallery with KAYOKOYUKI (Tokyo), AWASE Gallery (Tokyo), and Bambinart Gallery (Tokyo).
At TERRADA ART COMPLEX II, participating galleries will hold exhibitions concurrently, with presentations extending into the building’s shared spaces. Special participants include Marco Gallery (Osaka) and MASUMI SASAKI GALLERY (Tokyo).

2. Private Studios, Open to the Public

Located on the second floor of TERRADA ART COMPLEX I, TERRADA ART STUDIO Tennoz provides studio spaces for emerging artists. This year, for the first time, studios that are normally closed to the public will open their doors for “TERRADA ART STUDIO TENNOZ Open Studio 2026.” Resident artists will exhibit and sell their work while giving visitors a glimpse into their working spaces. Participating artists are Saeko Asai, Kzeymmt, GOU SHIBATA, RAURA SUZUKI, Yuji Tokuda, Nasim G. Pachi, Maasa Nishimura, and Kumiko Miyoshi.

3. A Group Exhibition Co-Curated by Noboru Tsubaki and WHAT CAFE

An art gallery café that primarily exhibits and sells works by emerging artists, WHAT CAFE will present “u.n.l.o.c.k. tube++,” with contemporary artist Noboru Tsubaki as guest curator. Alongside his own artistic practice, Tsubaki has devoted considerable effort to nurturing the next generation of artists, including establishing ARTOTHÈQUE within the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Kyoto University of the Arts. Through works by 37 artists selected by Tsubaki and WHAT CAFE, the exhibition explores how buying art—and living with it—can enrich everyday life and broaden one’s values.

4. Gallery Tours and a Night Museum

WHAT MUSEUM will hold gallery tours and a Night Museum event in conjunction with its current architecture exhibition, Corrugated / Coral – Eight Practices to Project Architecture Afar. During the gallery tours, members of the curatorial team will guide visitors through the exhibition, discussing the ideas behind the works and the creative processes that shaped them. On September 11 and 12, the museum will remain open until 8:00 pm, giving visitors an opportunity to engage with the words and perspectives of these emerging architects in the quiet atmosphere of the galleries after dark.

5. Painting on Silk: Experience the Techniques of Edo-Period Artists

PIGMENT TOKYO, a creative complex specializing in painting materials and equipped with an art-supply store, laboratory, and workshop facilities, will hold “Painting Flowers on Silk Canvas,” a workshop using eginu, a silk painting surface traditionally used in East Asian art. Participants will apply traditional Japanese colors to ultra-thin, nearly translucent silk, painting not only from the front but also experimenting with urazaishiki, or reverse-side coloring, as well as delicate gradation techniques. The workshop offers a hands-on opportunity to experience techniques used by painters of the Edo period.
