Museo Nacional del Ecuador Selects an Architect for Quito, Chelsea Set to Get a New Gallery this Art Week: Morning Links for July 24, 2026

Good Morning!

  • How will Jessica Morgan transform Tate? Expect more adventurous shows, greater accountability, and stronger connections with artists.
  • A new design by Japanese architecture firm SANAA has been selected for the Museo Nacional del Ecuador’s $100 million new home.
  • A replica Viking ship from Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is embroiled in a payment dispute, with its owner alleging that Universal failed to cover damage costs. Universal denies the claim.

THE HEADLINES

BIG ASK. The suits who hired Jessica Morgan to lead Tate are hoping she’ll restore its confidence, ambition, and curatorial edge. As the FT wrote, expect the museum to look beyond familiar names and champion overlooked artists, particularly those missing from traditional art histories, while bringing greater coherence to Tate’s sprawling collections. Morgan’s track record, especially at Dia Art Foundation, suggests more adventurous exhibitions, stronger connections with artists, and a renewed emphasis on quality over trend. But she’ll also need to balance the museum’s future-facing ambitions with the public’s appetite for iconic works and blockbuster exhibitions. Her task is to make Tate feel both more expansive and more compelling.

LAYER CAKE. A new design by Japanese architecture firm SANAA has been selected for the Museo Nacional del Ecuador in Quito, following a controversial reset of the competition process, The Art Newspaper reported. The winning proposal, “Living Strata,” imagines the museum as a series of layered spaces connecting culture, landscape, and history. The $100 million project aims to give a permanent home to a collection of 1.2 million objects, only a fraction of which are currently on display. The decision follows public backlash over the original winner, sparking debate over transparency, architectural judgment, and the role of public opinion in shaping major cultural projects.

THE KICKER

ALL THE CONTINENT’S A STAGE. Europe is often seen as a continent defined by its past, a vast archive of artistic achievement, historical landmarks, and cultural memory. But The Economist offers a fresh way of seeing the continent: not as a static museum, but as a “theme park” that continually curates and reinvents its heritage for a global audience. The idea captures Europe’s ability to turn culture into a living, valuable experience, from architecture and design to food and the arts. The question now is whether Europe can use that cultural confidence to fuel new ideas and creative energy, rather than simply refining its relationship with the past.
