Top 200 Collectors Clara Wu Tsai and Joseph Tsai to Divorce After Nearly 30 Years

Clara Wu Tsai and Joseph Tsai, the billionaire art collectors and owners of the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, are divorcing after nearly 30 years of marriage, the New York Post reported Friday.

The couple, who married in New York in 1996, were named jointly to ARTnews’s Top 200 Collectors list in 2018 and 2025, with a focus on contemporary art.

A representative for the Tsais told the Post that the split was mutual and amicable and that the two plan to keep working together across their business and philanthropic interests. Tsai will remain chairman of Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment and governor of the Nets, while Wu Tsai will remain vice chair and governor of the Liberty.

The couple’s art collection is relatively private, but their patronage has been much more visible. In recent years, they have helped bring work by Rashid Johnson, Tavares Strachan, and LaToya Ruby Frazier to Barclays Center, where Nets and Liberty play. In 2025, Frazier showed freestanding portraits of New York Liberty players there in what was her first public art commission.

Wu Tsai told Cultured that year that sports fans and art lovers had something in common: both were looking for “some sort of transcendence,” which made showing art in a sports setting feel natural to her.

Their giving has also reached major New York institutions. In 2022, the pair donated $50 million toward the redevelopment of David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center, and they have supported exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of the City of New York. The Tsais also established the Joe and Clara Tsai Foundation in 2014, with work spanning the arts, science, and social justice.
